It\u2019s called Good Hot Fish.\n\n\n\nThe small restaurant started as a pop-up. Now it\u2019s got a permanent spot next to Burial Beer Company. Drop in and you\u2019ll find the taste and vibes of an old-fashioned fish fry, with plates like the trout bologna sandwich and sides like stewed greens, baked mac n' cheese and hush puppies.\u00a0\n\n\n\nGood Hot Fish is run by Ashleigh Shanti. In 2020, Shanti was a semi-finalist for the James Beard \"Rising Star Chef of the Year\" award. \n\n\n\nLast year, she won a James Beard Foundation Media Award for her cookbook, Our South: Black Food Through My Lens. Recently, host Mason Adams stopped in at her restaurant for a catfish sandwich with a side of hot slaw and a conversation.\n\n\n\nIntergenerational Loom Weaving\n\n\n\nStudents in the Overmountain Weavers Guild\u2019s 2025 intro to handweaving course. Each August, the guild hosts an in-depth, foundational class that\u2019s focused on teaching beginner weavers the basics, and instructs intermediate weavers on expanding their skills and knowledge. With the industrial revolution, it became more often a hobby than an occupation, but there\u2019s been a resurgence in interest. And experienced weavers have been working to make the craft more accessible to newcomers. \n\n\n\nWeaver Toni Doman reported this story for the Rural Remix podcast from the Center for Rural Strategies.\n\n\n\nMini Journalists With Major Confidence\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEach weekday morning in Chattanooga, Tennessee, fifth graders deliver the day\u2019s news at Calvin Donaldson Elementary School. Their newscasts lean heavily on birthdays, the Pledge of Allegiance and school sports.\u00a0But the kids are getting more \u2014 a chance to look at the news from the inside out.\u00a0\n\n\n\nIan-Alijah Bey of Chattamatters shared their story. That\u2019s what happened in Oceana, a West Virginia town of about 1,200 people. The nonprofit One Voice operates a coffee shop and a warehouse, and helps with substance abuse recovery. \n\n\n\nAfter the floods of February 2025, One Voice staff and volunteers stepped in to assist with the response to flooding. The challenges in trying to help were nothing like what they expected. They\u2019re not just living there \u2013 they\u2019re also giving students hands-on experience with rehabilitation. \n\n\n\nWMRA's Randi B. But getting a variety of fresh seafood is harder if you live in a landlocked state.\u00a0\u00a0\n\n\n\nIn Charleston, West Virginia, there\u2019s General Steak and Seafood. Trucks arrive daily with salmon filets, swordfish, Chilean sea bass, scallops, Chesapeake Bay oysters and more. But if you want to taste a little of everything, pick up a bowl of the shop\u2019s renowned Yugoslavian Fish Stew. House Bill 4001\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0major\u00a0part of that agenda\u00a0that seeks to restructure how the state manages its economic development.\u00a0\n\n\n\nThe bill creates TEAM-WV, a not-for-profit corporation formed by the governor to promote economic development, job creation, job retention, job training, and the recruitment of business to this state. \n\n\n\nThe bill also triggers a full review of the state\u2019s existing economic development apparatus including the Department of Commerce, the Division of Economic Development, and the West Virginia Economic Development Authority. The secretary of Commerce is directed to identify inefficiencies and recommend consolidation of the entities\u2019 functions and duties by Sept. 15. \n\n\n\nThe bill\u2019s lead sponsor, Del. Clay Riley, R-Harrison, said the state\u2019s economic development efforts need to be unconstrained by bureaucratic limitations and political cycles to compete with neighboring states. \n\n\n\n\u201cFor decades, our state has relied primarily on a traditional state agency of economic development model housed within government and constrained by limitations and political cycles, a one size fits all approach,\u201d he said \n\n\n\nBut Del. Bill Ridenour, R-Jefferson, urged caution. \n\n\n\n\"I think we need to potentially look at some changes to this,\" he said. \u201cI think we need more oversight into what is going on with economic development and our current economic development entity, as well as with this.\u201d \n\n\n\nThe bill passed on a vote of 87 yeas to 8 nays, with four absent and now goes to the Senate for consideration. \n\n\n\nOther notable bills that made the crossover cut include House Bill 5453 which will modify the school aid funding formula to provide block grants of $6,100 per enrolled student to county school districts starting in 2029. from the Ohio River Valley Institute, an independent think tank with a focus on clean energy, says there are tens of thousands of abandoned or orphaned gas wells in the state that have gone uncounted.  \n\n\n\nA database maintained by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection\u2019s (DEP) Office of Oil and Gas lists roughly 16,000 abandoned wells, including about 4,500 orphaned wells without a known or solvent operator.  \n\n\n\nIn contrast, the report says there are more than 50,000 abandoned wells in the state.  \n\n\n\nAbandoned wells pose a high pollution risk as they are likely to leak harmful gases, such as methane and volatile organic compounds as they deteriorate. \n\n\n\nThe Ohio River Valley Institute recommends a production fee on oil and gas to fund the closure of the abandoned wells and employ thousands of West Virginians to do the work.  \n\n\n\nThe report says, \u201cRemaining funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law could decommission 1,393 orphaned wells through 2031, supporting an estimated 810 total job-years, according to IMPLAN modeling.  \n\n\n\n\u201cDecommissioning an additional 4,000 orphaned wells from 2032 to 2041 would create more than 2,000 job-years, or 207 jobs per year over the 10-year period. These jobs could help employ hundreds of oil and gas workers who have lost their jobs over the last several years as the drilling boom has subsided.\u201d \n\n\n\nAnother problem, according to the report, is that the state does not employ enough inspectors to do the job. The Legislature Today, Wednesday this week marked Crossover Day, the last day to consider bills in their chamber of origin, and next week is the final week in the 60-day West Virginia Legislative session. Nearly 2,800 bills were introduced this year. It remains to be seen just how many pass. Lawmakers have until Saturday, March 14 at midnight to work through those bills.\n\n\n\nThe state budget was the focal point this week. Thursday night, the House of Delegates concurred with final tweaks made by the Senate earlier that morning to increase Hope Scholarship funding, covering five quarters of payments into the 2027-2028 school year, trim road paving, and for the first time, fund the Flood Resiliency Fund.\n\n\n\nDuring the very minutes the Senate took its vote on the budget bill, News Director Eric Douglas was speaking with Kelly Allen, the executive director of the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, to discuss the budget and tax cuts. While some of the questions raised in the interview have now been answered, what remains is how they will play out for the state. 16:17:16","post_date_gmt":"2026-03-06 21:17:16","post_content":"\nA bill to bring West Virginia\u2019s school nutrition requirements in line with new federal guidelines has hit a snag in the House of Delegates. \n\n\n\nAfter more than two hours of public comment and testimony Thursday, the House Education Committee tabled Senate Bill 745 Friday. \n\n\n\nThe bill creates new limitations on added ingredients in food served to West Virginia students. That includes a list of 23 food additives like aspartame and aloe vera that would be deemed unsafe and banned.\n\n\n\nDel. Bob Fehrenbacher, R-Wood, who has studied chemical engineering, told the committee Thursday the list of additives seemed arbitrary and that most of them were simply preservatives.\n\n\n\n\u201cI am concerned that if we act in haste, we may regret that there are products that are safe, but all of a sudden they cannot be utilized in schools in West Virginia because they are outlawed,\u201d he said.\n\n\n\nFehrenbacher fell back on the old adage that \u201cdose makes the poison,\u201d and more than once cited the legality of alcohol as an analogy for products deemed acceptable in society with limits.\n\n\n\n\u201cCan I testify that I know for sure and for certain, as Del. Kump might say, that all these things have baseline maximum concentrations? No, but I don't know that they should be reduced to zero in the materials that our schools use,\u201d he said. \u201cTo move in that direction, I think, is prudent.
