• [H2] Industry:

Civil construction.

Client:

Westforce Construction is a based in Western Australia and was founded in 2006,as an earthworks and concrete specialist. Since then, the company has grown exponentially to become a major contractor that specialises in all aspects of civil and structural construction works. Their key areas of focus are the resource and infrastructure sectors, and the company has completed numerous projects for the government departments of Defence, Water Corporation, Western Power, Main Roads, and Public Transport Association (PTA).

In December 2017, Westforce became part of the Raubex Group, one of South Africa’s leading infrastructure and construction material supply groups. Their expertise extends across a variety of sectors including materials, roads, earthworks and infrastructure.

To date, the biggest and most successful project completed by Westforce has been a joint venture with JWI Construction, which saw both companies upgrade the drain diversion system for the Vasse River.

The Challenge:

As labour in Australia is expensive, Stanley Bubb, the financial manager at Westforce has access to a smaller workforce with which to run an effective financial department. In practise, this means that he and his assistant are responsible for managing the entire department from start to finish. This includes reconciling and paying invoices, completing all cost reporting and consolidating final reports for the Raubex head office.

The most important feature for me is the seamless integration between procurement and accounting provided by RIB with BuildSmart.
Stanley Bubb, Finance ManagerWestforce Construction

Before the implementation of the RIB solution, Westforce experienced a variety of challenges including:

Manual and time-consuming procurement of orders and processing of invoices
Ineffective reconciliation
Faulty tracking of commitments and costs
Inaccurate cost reporting to head office
Defective payroll calculations

The Solution:

In June 2019, RIB successfully implemented BuildSmart for Westforce. Having worked with this cost management and construction accounting solution previously, Stanley Bubb was already well acquainted with the software which led to a seamless integration with the company’s day-to-day processes and workflow.

By integrating construction and project management as well as cost and accounting administration, BuildSmart empowers Westforce to operate as a successful construction company with integrated systems that ensure the correct execution and completion of projects.

Today, Westforce benefits greatly from their use of BuildSmart, with the software providing an approval matrix designed to ensure that the procurement of electronic purchase orders is always pre-approved, and the reconciliation of orders is cost efficient.

Cost reporting to the Raubex head office has also become effortless thanks to BuildSmart’s ability to export transaction listings.

The Results:

Since implementing BuildSmart, Westforce has successfully completed a number of various projects such as:

Excavation and earthworks for the Roy Hill Iron Ore mine in Newman
The construction of a new access walkway for train maintenance by the Public Transport Authority in Ridgewood
And the Vasse River diversion drain upgrade in Busselton mentioned previously.

Going forward, Westforce plans to implement Candy and integrate it with BuildSmart to harness the full potential of the RIB Complete Solution; providing the company with enhanced functionality and visibility of their processes and budgets in real-time.

Industries:

Civil Engineering

Groundwork

Background:

Established in 1994, PP Construction is a British-based contractor that operates across a variety of sectors including commercial, defence, education, infrastructure and retail.

With a hands-on approach to project management, the company believes in partnering closely with clients from the planning stage through to final delivery; this ensures every job is completed safely, on time and budget.

As a result of this ethos, PP Construction not only enjoys sustained success but repeat business from clients such as Balfour Beatty, Croudace Homes and Wates Construction. Today, the company has an annual turnover of £10 million and works on projects ranging in value from £50,000 to £10 million.

The Challenge:

To ensure the successful day-to-day operation of the organisation, PP Construction has to be able to allocate costs correctly to their project and then track the progress of each throughout the lifecycle of a project.

Unfortunately, before 2021, the company utilised a spreadsheet-based system that resulted in siloed information, manual errors and no means to identify—in real time—if a job was losing or making money. On top of this, the business also employed a generic enterprise resource planning solution that was not tailored to the construction industry.

Support has been absolutely incredible – even after-hours. Anytime and every time we have asked or needed support; RIB have been there for us. A quote from the last directors board meeting- ‘These are the most solid figures and best reports we’ve had in 26 years! We didn’t use to know something was wrong until we ran out of money but now, we know before it gets to that and where we are losing it, allowing us to intervene and take corrective action before it’s too late’.
Zoe Perriam, Financial ControllerPP Construction Ltd

The Solution:

As a fully integrated cost management and enterprise accounting system, RIB BuildSmart was put forward to address the challenges encountered by PP Construction. Together with features designed specifically for the construction industry, this software seamlessly consolidates data for real-time insights no matter the stage of a project.

The Result:

With the implementation of BuildSmart, PP Construction is now empowered by a fit-for-purpose solution that harnesses data in real time to unite all stakeholders while covering every phase in the life cycle of a project.

As a result, the company not only enjoys the benefits of a construction-specific solution that aligns with their daily workflow, both in the office and on site, but they are also able to access valuable information from which informed decisions can be made on an operational, commercial and financial basis.

This, in turn, has led to significant cost savings thanks to the solution’s in-depth and detailed reporting, increased collaboration between colleagues who all work from a single source of truth now, and phenomenal peace of mind stemming from superior 24/7 support.

Going forward, PP Construction plan to implement RIB Candy and combine its estimating and project control functionality with BuildSmart, thereby unlocking for even greater cost control.

/*! elementor - v3.14.0 - 08-06-2023 */
.elementor-widget-text-editor.elementor-drop-cap-view-stacked .elementor-drop-cap{background-color:#69727d;color:#fff}.elementor-widget-text-editor.elementor-drop-cap-view-framed .elementor-drop-cap{color:#69727d;border:3px solid;background-color:transparent}.elementor-widget-text-editor:not(.elementor-drop-cap-view-default) .elementor-drop-cap{margin-top:8px}.elementor-widget-text-editor:not(.elementor-drop-cap-view-default) .elementor-drop-cap-letter{width:1em;height:1em}.elementor-widget-text-editor .elementor-drop-cap{float:left;text-align:center;line-height:1;font-size:50px}.elementor-widget-text-editor .elementor-drop-cap-letter{display:inline-block}

Industry:

Earthworks
Civil Construction
Commercial and Industrial
Rail Works
Public Works

Client:

Davison Earthmovers is based in Adelaide, South Australia, and has been in operation since 1986. The company was originally founded by John Davison but in July 2021 was taken over by his son, Paul. The company is focused on providing earthmoving services to the commercial, industrial, government and civil sectors. They undertake a wide variety of projects, ranging from large-scale bulk earthworks using heavy machinery to smaller detailed works such as drainage, kerbing, landscaping, bitumen surfacing and more.

One of their biggest projects completed to date is the Mount Barker Regional Sports Hub which includes two full-sized soccer pitches, 28 000 m2 of roadway and footpath pavement, building pad construction works, two kilometres of stormwater infrastructure, and 700 m of grated-drain installation. The contract value for this project was $3.7 million and the construction duration was ten months.

The Challenge:

Before BuildSmart was implemented, Administration Manager Mary-Ann Higgins and her team experienced numerous challenges including:

The execution of supplier invoice approvals and storage processes separately from their accounting system
The manual consolidation of contracts, plant ledger and payroll to the general ledger
Cumbersome, manual data capturing utilising a paper-based system
A reporting process hampered by a lack of effective system report options and ineffective collation of data
No activity-based costing which made it difficult to establish whether a project was making a profit or a loss

I’d recommend BuildSmart as a fully integrated system that includes payroll, plant and procurement modules. It gives us greater visibility and control, as all our information and documents are in one place. The combination of value for money, for all these modules in one system, together with dedicated support is great.
Mary-Ann Higgins, Administration Manager, Davison Earthmovers

The Solution:

The implementation of BuildSmart began in February 2021 and the solution went live in May of the same year. The entire process ran smoothly and was well received by Davison Earthmovers thanks to 24/7 support from the RIB BuildSmart team.

Since implementing the software:

Full procurement workflow now happens automatically
Unapproved committed costs and progress claims can be tracked and resolved accordingly
Importing plant hours is seamlesstakes around an hour to complete as opposed to eight hours previously
Payroll integration has improved with pay period rollover automatically posting to the contracts and general ledger
Ledger transactions can be run according to categories such as contact, supplier or by contract activity code. Reporting options and parameters have also improved vastly.

The Results:

Davison Earthmovers’ workflow and overview of their projects have been enhanced significantly with the help of BuildSmart. Thanks to the boost in productivity resulting from the solution, the company also enjoys improved cost and contract management, allowing time for the improvement of other systems and procedures.

Industry:

Summertown Interiors is focused on Commercial, Healthcare and Retail related Fit-out projects.

Client:

Summertown Interiors

For over 20 Years, Summertown Interiors has been among the UAE’s leading and most sustainable contractors, offering superior quality interior fit out solutions. They were also seeking software that would boost their tendering system in a highly competitive business, like interior fitout.

I would recommend RIB products to others because it is developed by Contractors for Contractors
Deniz Demir, Finance ManagerSummertown Interiors

The Solution:

Summertown Interiors chose BuildSmart to form the backbone of their financial management system and Candy as their primary estimation and project control solution.

Implementation:

Summertown Interiors implemented RIB to meet the challenges faced by all departments and to streamline workflows and processes from first estimate through to final account. Often the teams were only able to analyse the data in hindsight, by which time, corrections and alternations were too late to be fully effective. This needed to change. As a result, BK Gulf wanted to overhaul their fairly closed accounts system. The need for easily accessible, visible, real time data was identified as the core solution along with reporting and procurement functions.

RIB delivered more than we expected in a very short time frame. As part of the implementation process, the team ensured thorough knowledge transfer. This has enabled BK Gulf to realise the full benefits of the products immediately. We certainly made the right decision for our business by choosing RIB as our business partner.
Luke Ashe, Commercial ManagerBKGULF LLC

The Solution:

Sharing Knowledge for better Solutions

BK Gulf wanted a solution, not just a product. They knew that one-stop integrated systems are what we’re best at. It was important for them to work with people who didn’t just understand software, but who understood the industry. BK Gulf valued our field-specific knowledge, especially because our consultants had already come across similar problems. A fresh yet experienced pair of eyes was what they needed – and that is exactly what they got.

Implementation

Our preferred solution was quick and effective. We recommended a three (3) month programme implementing both Candy and BuildSmart simultaneously, focusing on:

Candy Estimating & Project Control
BuildSmart Accounts and Site costing
BuildSmart Procurement and Materials costing
BuildSmart Stock and Inventory Management
BuildSmart Plant Management, Maintenance and Costing, Yard Stock
BuildSmart Sub-Contractor Management

The Results:

Time is of the Essence

Our software is driving business efficiency at BK Gulf. Candy Valuations breaks down the BOQ, giving a quick snapshot and speeding up procurement. Information entered as work is done automatically feeds into the system – ready for reporting at the click of a button. They used to spend around ten (10) days manually pulling together cost reports from accounts release. That’s now down to two (2) days. This has huge practical advantages. Staff have more time to review the data instead of preparing it. Audit time is reduced. And the board gets reports sooner thanks to the faster release of accounts information. The whole process used to take six (6) weeks. Now it takes just two (2) to three (3).

Real-time Cost Approvals with Accuracy

BK Gulf are now in control of contract costs. An updated resource list of the contract and BuildSmart ICMS real-time reporting means they can sit and discuss issues for the next plan – not old issues that have already happened. Data is hugely more accurate too. Information comes from source giving better quality data they know they can trust. They no longer need to pull together separate pieces of information together, meaning they no longer risk making errors. BK Gulf now have a tool to analyse data and find out if/where there are any discrepancies.

Intelligent Integration with Integrity

RIB solutions are different to other software because they link and integrate all data. Everyone at BK Gulf now works with standard reports. In the same language. In the same format. Plus tight system security keeps their data safe.Clean cost data has been the biggest improvement for BK Gulf and it’s thanks to our seamless link between procurement and cost accounting. They have the cost and activity codes right at the start, meaning everything flows all the way through. Gone are the days of manual requisitions and changing cost codes as the project goes through various approvals.

Burj Al Arab is a luxury hotel located in Dubai, UAE.
